Round 5 Hockenheim 2016

Race 1

The Trofeo Pirelli delighted spectators with an emotion-filled race from the very start. Fabio Leimer (Octane 126) made a perfect start entering the first turn ahead of Philipp Baron (Rossocorsa) and Bjorn Grossmann (Octane 126). On the very first lap, the race was neutralised by the Safety Car caused by Galip Atar, Jan Danis and Huilin Han; however, on re-start, Leimer took off again, also clocking the fastest lap of the race. The Swiss driver (a former GP2 champion), took a commanding lead, helped also by the duel between Baron and Grossmann who did not shy away from struggling tooth and nail against each other. Grossmann set up the overtake at the hairpin and completed the manoeuvre before entering the Motodrom. At the finish, Leimer came ahead of Grossmann, who strengthened his championship lead, and Baron. The fourth place of Alessandro Vezzoni (Rossocorsa-Pellin Racing), the fifth of Marcello Puglisi (Rossocorsa), and the sixth of David Gostner (Ineco-MP Racing) are worthy of mention.

Race 2

In the second quali Fabio Leimer drives the best time with nearly no brake pressure and starts the second race from pole, behind him Björn Grossmann as second and Baron on the third. Until the near end of the race the positions of the first three didn't change and Fabio has to lap a car, but the driver doesn't realise he has to move. Fabio is blocked and Björn can catch up. After both passed the car, Björn takes his chance and overtakes Fabio as well.

Summary

After Round 5 in Hockenheim Björn is leading the championship with 41 points in front of Baron and 57 points ahead of Puglisi. Fabio is only 36 points behind the third place. Next race takes place in Jerez.

Round 4 Sochi 2016

Race 1

The day’s programme opened with the Trofeo Pirelli, which saw a close race from start to finish. A fantastic head to head at the flag between the two 458 Challenge EVOs of Octane 126 saw Bjorn Grossmann slip into the lead at the first corner ahead of star rookie Fabio Leimer (2013 GP2 champion). A little further back Philipp Baron (Rossocorsa), Aleksey Basov (Motor Service) and Sam Smeeth (Stratstone Ferrari) attempted to thread their way through together on Turn 1, with Baron cutting across part of the track to slip into third ahead of Basov and Smeeth. Grossmann stretched his lead recording the fastest lap of 2:14.100, while Baron was ordered to give way to Basov. Grossmann finished in front of his teammate Leimer while Baron crossed the line third but later received a penalty of 13 seconds to end up behind Basov to the delight of thousands of spectators who had flocked to the Sochi Autodrom.

Race 2

The Trofeo Pirelli was first on the programme again today, with another exciting head to head between the 458 Challenge EVOs of Octane 126. Bjorn Grossmann started best, jumping ahead of everyone at the first corner while Philipp Baron (Rossocorsa) took advantage of a sluggish Fabio Leimer to thread through into second place. However, the Swiss soon fought back to take important points off Grossmann’s main championship rival. At the end home driver Aleksey Basov (Motor Service) lost fourth place to an aggressive Marcello Puglisi (Rosscorsa) while Alessandro Vezzoni spent the entire race on the attack. With this victory Grossmann, who also recorded the fastest lap, lengthened his lead in the standings over Baron and Puglisi. Only the races at Hockenheim, Jerez de la Frontera and the Finali Mondiali in Daytona are still to go before the end of the season.

Summary

After Round 4 in Sochi Björn is leading the championship with 30 points in front of Baron and 38 points ahead of Puglisi. Our new team member Fabio Leimer showed his full perfomance even though it was his first time in a GT car.

Round 3 Le Mans 2016

Race

Björn Grossmann had a successful start when the green flag waved and overtook the rookie and first-time pole man Alberto Cola in the first chicane. In the same location Martin Nelson and Florian Merckx (Baron Service) were involved in a collision, causing the race to go to a full-course caution. Because of the safety car the gap between the leading cars shrank and, after the green flag, one guy became too impatient and used Grossman’s car to brake in the chicane. After the spin Björn went on in 14th position, while Philipp Baron (Rossocorsa) would suffer a drive through penalty for causing the collision. The next time the yellow flag was waved, Baron cashed in his penalty and went 5th. In the last lap Grossmann overtook David Gostner, even though the side of his car was damaged, and accomplished a second place finish behind Marcello Puglisi.

Summary

After Round 3 in Le Mans Björn is leading the championship with 9 points in front of Baron and 13 points ahead of Puglisi.

Round 2 Mugello 2016

Race 1

Mugello is a very technical race track, on which a good car setup and driver experience are necessary. Because our car was the fastest last year in Mugello, we only needed some small adjustments on the car in the test runs. After a perfect qualifying, Björn started from pole positon and kept his position. With the fastest lap and a 19 seconds gap to the following driver Marcello Puglisi, Björn completed the first race perfectly.

Race 2

In the afternoon Race 2 of the Trofeo Pirelli was quite a show right from the start. Björn started from pole again and exited the first corner unscathed ahead of Philipp Baron and Marcello Puglisi. Grossmann opened a gap over his rivals lapping in 1:54:032 (fastest lap) gradually pulling away from Baron who in turn kept Puglisi well under control. With a gap of 14 seconds to second Björn drove over the finish line.

Summary

1 weekend, 2x pole positions, 2x winning races and 2x fastest laps: a full score. Standing after round 2: only one point behind the championship leader. Next race: Le Mans, prologue of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Round 1 Monza 2016

Race 1

The octane126 team has grown by two new drivers: Galip Atar, a really good Turkish driver with much experience in driving with Porsche and BMW, and James Fischer our first Swiss driver with experience in driving GT cars like the Audi R8. For both it was their first race in the Ferrari Challenge and they started in the AM category.
Because of winning the championship last year our PRO driver Björn Grossmann changed his car number from 84 to 1.

After an unlucky qualifying Björn had to start in fifth position with rivals “Babalus” and Philipp Baron starting first and second in front of him. But Björn gave all he could and finished the race in third. James started from seventh and Galip from tenth place in their category. James managed to gain two places and finished fifth. After a series of contacts Galip wasn’t able to finish the race.

Race 2

The second qualifying went better for Björn and he was second fastest on the track. At the race the start was not so bad, but the rivals gave no space to Björn in the first chicane, so he had to take an unintended shortcut. Unfortunately, that maneuver could be the reason for his tire blow out a few laps later. Monza is one of the fastest race tracks in the calendar and always a challenge for the tires. James Fischer drove from seventh to fifth place and Galip from tenth to eighth.
